1. What do the Olympic Games in general mean to you?
At the time of racing in the ’04 Olympics it actually didn’t mean a huge amount. I was so focused on doing a job and that was to win a medal. Having been away from elite athletics I realize that the Olympics are the pinnacle of any athlete’s career. I am incredibly proud to say that I am an Olympian – I believe only 2000 people in the UK are since the Games started.

2. The Games are taking place in London this summer, a unique experience. What are you looking forward to the most?
Bizarrely I have an odd take on this question! I still struggle to relax and enjoy athletics as I still have that desire to be competiting. I will enjoy watching the sports that I cannot associate with such as swimming and cycling.

3. How would you describe the atmosphere now, a few months before the opening ceremony, is anticipation rising among the British people?
I think amongst the hardcore sports fan the anticipation will be certainly growing. With the Diamond Jubilee and the European football champs there is still much to focus on before the actually Games.

4. Please say a few words about how London has changed.
The East End of London has changed dramatically. This is a huge part of the Games legacy – to regenerate the East End. Before the Games were awarded to London the East End was in much need of investment. This has now arrived and the area has now become and will be a focal point of London.

5. What does it mean to you that the Games are taking place in London?
When I competed in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester the atmosphere was incredible. I suspect London will be similar and this will only help and aid any athletes competing. For the public watching, it will be a historical event that they will talk about forever!

6. Are you going to watch any competitions live in the stadium? If yes, which ones?
Being an Olympian I was offered tickets but I declined. I think I am actually in the Dordogne when the Games start!

7. What is going to remain from the Games when they’re over?
The environment in the East End will have improved dramatically. We will have some incredible sports facilities.

8. Do you believe that part of the spirit will suffer from the comprehensive security measures?
Security will play a major part but I think the UK will try and be subtle about it. I guess with an event of this magnitude it’s inevitable that security will be very thorough. I suspect there will be a lot of queuing!!

9. Which headline would you like to read during the Games?
That the Games has been well received and delivered on their promise.

10. What is more important to the British people, the European football championship or the Olympic Games in their own country?
50:50!
